air layer and retrofits

Post by Kostas » Wed Dec 08, 2021 11:32 pm -1100

Hello there,
I have a brick cavity wall, and for the modelling of the cavity I followed the advice on one other topic; the advice was to split the cavity in three smaller ones using the standard air layer material except the middle one where you should use the air layer without additional moisture capacity. My question is that if I want to retrofit this wall I am using the water content at the end of this simulation as the starting point in the new retrofitted wall. In this case would the water content in the various layers be correct so I can use them?

Regards,
Kostas

Hi Kostas,

yes, you can use the water contents as initial water contents for further calculations. The initial water content in the air layer(s) is from little interest, as the air has no high capability but a high permeability, so this moisture will be out again fast. More important is the initial water content for the mineral materials.

I'm doing a similar calculation at the moment. Could someone point me at the original discussion on splitting the cavity into different layers, I've seen it referred to in several places but can't find it.

See here how to split the air layer:
